I don"t have my mill"s manual in front of me, but I can plainly tell you...1,000 rpm is not even close. The magic number I seem to recall is around 1,800-2,000 rpm at the mill shaft. My mill(s) are Ward"s Grainbusters....but I don"t think it matters who made them...the mill shaft"s speed would be much the same on any of them.

The only thing low RPM sucks with is small endmills. I ran a lot of 1/8" endmill toolpaths with that 4500 RPM mill and, well, I learned there isn't much "feed the shit out of it" in an 1/8" endmill in aluminum. 4500 with a small tool just won't get the chips out of the cut and needs a lot of coolant to stay alive as it wittles along at 15 IPM.

for a beginner starting out on a mill i wouldn't recommend it at all, but after some experience on a mill you will get to know the noises. its not a game to try if you have a lot of backlash on your mill, i have some backlash on my own mill. no more than 40 thou odd and i manage it grand. like i say, some will climb mill and others wont.
